I think jack directly eats the hardware for performance reasons, which
is a good thing (namely for the peformance reasons!)
You can go the other way around however and emulate more OSS/ALSA apps
for jack, I think the program is called 'jacklaunch' or something like that.
While you simply use dmix while jack is not running.
