Actually that's the problem - there's no single "dreaded hda_intel
chip", because the design gives the vendor of your laptop/mobo so much
flexibility to screw things up. Each laptop/mobo with this chip has to
be debugged separately, based on the codec and how broken your BIOS is.

In general the cheaper your machine the more issues you will have
because the bargain hardware vendors are more likely to skimp on QA and
just ship it as soon as it boots Windows.
