Many movies from the silent era had original scores, sometimes more than one,
and were premiered with orchestral accompaniment. Not one movie ever was
shown silent, at least someone always played a klavier in the theatre. The
notion of "silent movies" was unheard of :)

In the Faust case Werner Richard Heymann and Paul Hensel wrote different
scores. Many original scores have been lost. People don't stop to write new
music for silent movies though.

You're probably aware of this and of course you're right about the
non-existing technical soundtracks in prints from the era and reproductions
of these.

But there are lots of Hollywood studio re-releases of silent movies (all of
Chaplin for example) with soundtracks, that sometimes even carry original
music from the time.
