Although it is proprietary software, energyXT2 on Linux is quite
a nice solution.. it has a good built-in synth which will play
samples etc.. Also it is possible to run the windows version
under wineasio and be able to use windows VSTs.
You might also consider looking at tracker software such as
Renoise (also proprietary), milkytracker, soundtracker, etc.
or aldrin (a Buzz-like solution).. if you decide to use aldrin,
you need to build the current development version, or use the
packages here:
