One advantage of digitising LPs is that you can edit out ticks and
scratches -- which can indeed result in a recording that sounds better
than the original record.
I would recommend looking for a decent soundcard that'll capture at
24-bit resolution, since the extra headroom is handy when digitising
records. You don't need to worry so much about setting the input gain
correctly, since you can capture at a relatively low level, then
normalise the resulting recording.
