i do not know exactly what happens inside an exciter, but it has something to
do with controlled distortion.
A short frequencyband is chosen (like 5 kHz or 7 kHz depends on your
material) and or even or uneven harmonic partials (i don't remember which
ones. One of them sounds terrible, the other sounds great) are created upon
this small frequencyband. These "new" frequencies are mixed with the
original in low volume, so the original sound that was dull before becomes
alive and sparkling.
 It sounds great when using it upon vocals in a band when mixing, the voice
gets a lot more presence without any volume changes.
I build one in the 1988 but that's hardware, i want it to use with ardour.
