You could install timidity and an extra-interfaces package that includes
the gtk+ interface, then launch timidity with the interface option "g"
to specify the gtk+ interface--
timidity -ig
This interface allows you to speed or slow the tempo, but only in fixed
increments, not one-beat-per-minute at a time.
