Hi!
   From what I've seen of .pls-files they can have a bit more structure or
other information. I think mplayer understands both. But .m3u is more
universal, due to its simplicity I believe.
   Other info in .m3u-files: I've often seen something like:
*** CUT ***
#EXTINF,-1,Radio station one
http://radiostation.one.org:8001
*** CUT ***
   This can be helpful to some systems. I have installed slimserver, some
network broadcasting software meant to work with some hardware, but also with
software, which uses this info to display in a web-interface/hardware device
display.
