i don't know if qtractor uses smf files as its native representation
of MIDI on disk (ardour3 does), but assuming that it does ...

SMF files are not really editable in any coherent way with a text
editor. they contain non-ASCII, non-UTF data. so although you could
theoretically edit them with any reasonably powerful editor (neither
nano nor gedit probably fit the bill there), it would be a pretty
unpleasant experience.
