You probably won't have write permission if it's outside your home directory.

ah ha! -- just as I opened your email I had just spied the 'settings' dialog
and figured this out
I created a local zynaddsubfx directory and placed banks and presets in there
and now it works
oy vey! nothing like a little cognitive dissonance to get the day started ;)
