Hardware puts the controls in the musician's hands and avoids all
the trouble of setting up computers etc. It's just a lot easier to
use and reliable. There's also a hype factor but the same can be
said about software effects.

The 'lot of work' is maybe what it takes, and you can always record
two or more tracks at the same time, a clean one and any number with
effects applied.
