Have you considered at all Renoise? I know it's not free but it does run well on Linux and is extremely reasonably priced, especially compared to the hardware you mention.

With the API scripting there are a few tools out that bring the kind of functionality you desire, even if it isn't designed to work exactly like that as standard. In fact there is one based around the MPC2000Xl (although still in Beta really.) http://www.renoise.com/board/index.php?/topic/30473-new-tool-27-mpe2000xl/

Have known a few people say Renoise gives them the best feel of any sequencer when coming from an MPC machine. Not sure how many (any?) would be Linux users and would have tried SEQ24 though...
