I'm wondering, too.
My naive attempt to compile (adding various libraries along
the way) got stuck.
(master) ~/build/sndfile-tools $ ./autogen.sh
checking for autoconf... yes
checking for automake... yes
checking for libtool... libtoolize
checking for pkg-config ... yes
I am going to run ./configure with no arguments - if you wish
to pass any to it, please specify them on the ./autogen.sh command line.
Generating configuration files for sndfile-tools, please wait ...

I tried adding some -rpath or -rpath-link arguments
to the Makefile LD and LDPATH lines, but to no avail.
Thanks.
