[LAU] MP4 Video

I have an .MP4 video I need to edit.

What editing software do people recommend?
I am running Fedora 17.

I assume that in addition to video software installation
I will need to install a codec to deal with the
proprietary MP4 format.

Is there a way to convert the MP4 to a non-proprietary
video format?  If so, what format would that be?
