I once did a session with a group of jazzers from a local university,
fine players all, but the gig was ruined by a sit-in pianist. It was a
classic producer's boondoggle. Everyone else on the session could read
and improvise, the poor pianist could not do either to save his soul.
What had been promised to be an hour-long session turned into a six-hour
nightmare of constant retakes, thanks to the producer's insistence that
we work it out with his piano man. Pity was, the pianist was a sweet
guy, very amiable, and he knew he was 'way out of his league.
Nevertheless the producer was paying for the session and he ran the
show. It was awful. Of course this all took place long before software
entered the studio.

We had our own piano player there too, a fellow named Scott Lavender
(not the Scott Lavender on LAU, btw), but the producer wouldn't use him.
Scott's currently the music director for Johnny Mathis. Oh well. It was
my first experience with the notion that the producer (aka Mr Money) is
always right.

Best,

dp
