It does require more CPU usage, but you don't need to use as many
plugins (EQ, compression, limiting, etc) to get a good basic mix. They
do have some plugins to help tweak a mix, like the bass & vocal
character plugins, mastering EQ plugin, etc., but they aren't
necessary, you can get by with the Calf plugins. :-)
Can't wait until MB3 comes out, it will have all of the A3 goodies :-)
