As others on the list suggested, here's the alsa-base.conf file I copied
as-is from Ubuntu Studio 12.10 live CD. I didn't add or remove anything
from it; I'm sure there's stuff in there that doesn't need to be there
anymore! (Also, watch out for wordwraps!)
