Jeremy, since you mentioned Rakarrack, perhaps Nicola will test to use
the monophonic MIDI converter.

Nicola, Rakarrack can convert the monophonic audio input of your
guitar to MIDI notes and you could use Qsynth (fluidsynth) to play a
Bass sample. There are gratis sound fonts available, just search the
Internet for soundfonts, e.g. http://www.hammersound.net/ . Debian
unlikely provides Qsampler (linuxsampler) regarding the license policy,
but you could build it and than also use GIG files.

IMO neither a pitch shifter, nor the MIDI converter will provide a good
way to fake a bass. Playing a bass sound by a keyboard or even editing a
bass track likely sounds closer to a real bass. JMMV!
