One of the keys to social media promotion is when the Search engines
associate the media with popularity. Hence if a track doesn't get much of
a reception from the core listening base it makes it much less likely that
it will make it into search results.

It should not be a surprise that some of us in Linux Audio want to promote
Linux Audio and #musicmadewithlinux to as wide an audience as possible.
There are many good reasons which have nothing to do with money but if
someone makes some money from their art created with Linux tools that
doesn't make their art any less relevant.

No one is forcing you to participate in social media and help people in
this community promote their music/art to a wider audience.

Your support is probably not going to make much difference by itself. It's
a simple numbers game. The more people who actively take the time to
comment, like, link, subscribe, tweet, retweet, share AND view the more
chance that the search algorithms will give priority to the tracks so that
people who are searching for something new will find it.

If you like a track don't just listen to it. Take the time to do one or
all of the above and you will be helping the artist. It doesn't cost any
thing so it's not really a big ask if you are prepared to use social media
for your consumption in the first place.

If you don't like a track that shouldn't exclude you from offering your
support to the artists anyway. Your support might give the artist the
motivation to have another go and the result might be awesome. In that
case you could add a short comment as constructive feedback. Comments are
factored by the search algorithms too.

It's a small thing for each listener to do that can make a big difference
to the artist. Instead of paying money to consume your media like in the
ol days before the interweb, just pay with your metadata. At least when
you use your metadata you don't have to make a choice between buying your
lunch/coffee/cigarettes and listening to a new track.
