Depends on what type of data and the constraints.
Maybe OSC? MIDI? Ableton Link? JACK transport? LV2 Atoms? TCP sockets?
MPEG media Transport? copper wire?

Plugin hosts like Carla (
http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Applications:Carla )
can do some things to make it possible to use different plugin types
together to some degree, if that is what you are looking for.
