Not really for breaks, but for all timed events I use cron (or whatever
clone/successor is running on my system). As a timer, for food etc., I
play an audiofile. If you were busy with audio, on a GUI, I suppose you
could try to pop up a big image, or if you don't need the microphone, a
few beep on the PC speaker, if you have one.
