I've been rehearsing with my accordion ensemble for half a year using
Jamulus. Yes, we don't all have the best Internet (cable or low-quality
DSL are the most problematic) so connection quality keeps to be a
recurring theme but not a deterrent.
It's also been surprisingly effective to inject my Solton MS40 arranger
with some suitable fixed rhythm into the mix: it teaches everybody where
you tend to slow down or speed up and that maintaining one's speed (once
it has a chance to be pretty consistent) is reasonably reliable. In
addition, it makes it more habitual to listen to a central player (like
bass) rather than your "next neighbor".
Doing that a few times has a surprising effect on the stability and
confidence of the tempo even if you take the drummer out again. And it
sure beats the appeal of some metronome.
It will be interesting to see what happens when we return to physical
rehearsals.
