When I was getting the autoconf/automake thing going I didn't
even look at libtool. Its taken care or by autoconf. For a
reasonably good tutorial on the whole configure thing have a
look at :

    http://www.amath.washington.edu/~lf/tutorials/autoconf/

It gives a couple of minimalist examples that are very easy to
build on. Also grab the autotools package that is listed.
