        If you're interested in creating sound applications under Java,
it's highly recommended that you use Java 1.2 as there is a 'new' sound
API.. though you might want to keep an eye on the jdk1.3 with even
more sound extensions (though it will be a while before it comes out on
Linux since 1.2 isn't even out of beta..)
        Also there's the new Java Media Framework 2.0 that was very
recently released.. it has a plugin ability that provide all kinds of
interesting tools (ie: quicktime, real media G2, etc..) to play with in one's
quest for the ultimate audio app.. no native MP3 support announced though
:(
