if they have windows or mac software to run them, they don't work
under linux. MOTU and Midiman have refused to provide specs. The USB
stuff should work at some point, but the last i heard, the
kernel/driver USB group were still trying to get hold of some Opcode
USB devices to test.

there are some standalone MIDI interface boxes that don't interact
with a computer. A german company called Miditemp makes a very nice
for one for about 1000 Euro's. Its the next midi interface that i will
be buying. it is basically a matrix midi router - you can do any
routing you can imagine. it comes with a hand-held remote controller, too.

you can also get lucky with older standalone (2nd hand) MIDI patch
bays - i paid $100 for an ensoniq KMX-16 which has 16 ins and 15
outs. it won't do simultaneous routing of all inputs to one output
like the Miditemp, but it can merge any pair of inputs to any set of
outputs. it has no software to control it, but does have sysex
control. i like it.
