Well, I played XGalaga across our sloppy 10 Mbit network at work, and
there was no noticeable performance degradation; the pixmaps are
uploaded to the X server, and the latency of further operations was
certainly not a problem. However, I haven't seriously been using
applications that way for extended periods, so I can't say how well
it works with Qt, GTK+ (toolkits run on the application side - not
with the X server!), various applications and so on...
