The key thing to remember here is that a replacement for MIDI is going
to be in the exact same problem space as the score languages
associated with "traditional non-realtime academic synthesis
languages". Basically, for both systems, want an event stream to
control the operation of some "apparatus".

There has been a lot of excellent work in this area, and some
significantly different paradigms; I can only suggest Curtis Rhoad's
"The Computer Music Tutorial" as a way to get a handle on the
top-level references.
