today, i got a long way porting softwerk to GTK (well OK, Gtk--).
about 80% of the functionality is in place already.

a major new feature that GTK makes easy to support is an arbitrary
number of steps and an arbitrary number of sequences. you can
dynamically add steps and sequences while softwerk is running. of
course, this ends up involving the dreaded scrollable windows and
their associated scrolling controls, but the benefits currently seem to
outweigh the inconvenience. if anyone has any good UI tips on how to
minimize the damage these cause, i'd love to hear them.

minor new features: a mute button for each sequence, plus the control
over the visual appearance offered by using GTK's rc files.

i still need to add trigger editing, a patternfile interface, and some
other minor details, but this shouldn't take too long given how quick
the bulk of it has been.

and of course, softwerk is now based on libsigc++ as well as my own
libmidi++, and will use autoconf/automake. there are no calls to the
UI from the "engine" any more, although this particular piece of
software will not be split into a library any time soon :)
