If there's a standard API that's public and a set of programs that can
interchangably use free and commercial plug-ins, it will only be a
short while before there are free plugins that are far superior to the
crappy commercial ones. That will probably keep the bottom feeders
out of the market.

Hopefully the reputable code shops will put out good-quality plug-ins;
they'll have to do good work to compete with the free software (unless
they rely on patented algorithms, which IIRC most of them do for
things like reverb, keeping free developers from competing with them).
