It is SoundBlaster 16 from Creative, and headphones from Sennheiser.
I'm sure the connection I have made is the first one which other people
will make. It would be surprising if Joe Average would buy extra hardware
besides that.

(a) doesn't belong in this discussion.
For (b), this affects only analog signals -- we are not screwing the digital
signal inside the Alsa.

For safety (b) is okay. You need anyway to read the Quality Doc to get
most out of your card and driver. I learned to set my SB16 by reading
from docs.
