2 choices:

1) use lesstif (bad choice)
2) skip all the stupid Motif bullsh*t ...

        ./configure --with-gtk

lesstif was strained to the limit (and beyond) by Bill's heavy use of
Motif arcana. The GTK+ version stands much more chance of being
maintained and developed, and my experience to date has been that its
more stable that snd+lesstif already. there are just a few things (kbd
accelerators being a big one).

Check the output of ./configure --help for other possibly useful
options.
