I mostly agree, except that I have to note that this is precisely why
control surfaces like the Mackie HUI, the DigiDesign ProControl and
the various Cooper control surfaces are growing in popularity. Hell,
even the lowly PC1600x or the PhatBoy. People recognize that doing it
in the computer is great, but they want the dedicated input devices
offered by analog gear. They *don't* want the metaphors and models
replaced, I believe.

Of course, these don't entirely solve the monitor situation, but I
think that can be done with good physical engineering in the "studio".

Once the cost gets down on the surfaces, expect to see them in much
wider use.
