Yes, all the time. This is why I was talking about io bandwidth limits few
months ago. This behaviour is emphasized when there is some memory intensive
application running and system starts to use swap. Even lowest priority user
process can kill audio applications this way. (This usually happens to me
when I forget to end some matrix operation with semicolon in Octave...)

I'm still dreaming about mainframe -type capability to limit io bandwidths
and io priorities.

Only way I've found to keep this problem away is to use suitable hardware,
U160 SCSI controller and multiple U160 10+ krpm disks. This way the disk io
has enough burst behaviour.
