for the near term future, the answer is no. for me personally, its
vastly more important to get the editing side moving again, either
with snd or some other project (snd is my direction for now).

however, ultimately, as you may have guessed, i really want Ardour to
evolve into a full DAW system, in which there will be a mixer window
which acts as control system for an strip-and-bus based system (*) This
system will in turn be used to feed the Ardour audio engine. I can't
tell you how long it might be till I get around to this.

I would note, however, that the code to do this at a low-level would
be phenomenally simple to write, and that if someone wants to do a
little #ifdef project for Ardour that adds some control element for
each track to control its volume in the mix, I would almost certainly
be willing to add that to the source base. The UI part is way trickier
than the implementation, which would consist of copying several
existing memcpy-like functions and adding a gain argument to each one.

True, this is definitely the case for me at home. In fact, right now,
i have a really sub-par setup, because despite having 8 channels of
A-D and D-A, only 2 of them are connected. I need to get a patch bay
so that that i can change this situation.

However, please keep in mind that my first and primary target is not
the "home studio", but a small-medium commercial studio that might
otherwise use ProTools or something else. It will be a long time until
we can challenge Digidesign or Steinberg, but that day will come. As
we get closer to it, the "home studio" coders are free to take my
stuff and modify/extend/disable aspects of it that are not quite right
for that kind of situation.

OTOH, as I said, I do have a t > c situation in my own home, so I'm
not likely to completely ignore this scenario (which was the
motivation for the whole track bounce-down/mix-down thing in the first
place).

--p

(*) inputs and outputs will probably be any LADSPA or VST plugin, along
    with the physical channels.
