agreed. but the problem still remains (and i like douglas's proposal)
that it becomes laborious to use a plugin to process a static chunk of
data in ways that require the plugin to know how long it is (amplitude
enveloping being the most obvious example). i think that his
suggestion is a good one, in that it would simplify the job of using
plugins from "editing" apps.
