Yeah, I think I should have got one of these rather than a 1212, oh well.

OK, I'll look at these. snd sounds like more my kind of thing (vi user ;)

This sounds exactly like what I want, basicly a software replacement
for an ADAT machine, but with the ability to transfer the tracks to a
PCM editor.

I like the horizontal view of vegas, but I could live without it, and I
guess if you can export all the tracks to snd that would be equivalent.

I tried Jazz++ on linux and windows, but didn't get on with it, too much
like Cubase, which I can't stand. Seemed very buggy too.

No, its propietary sysex stuff. Wine is the only real possibility, the
interface is very complicated. I started writing a replacement myself (in
Java), but when Clavia released the Mac version I lost interest.

Its SCSI. There are two third party pieces of software that talk AKAIs
dialect of sampler control SCSI (different to everyone elses of course) I
might pester them to see if they are willling to port to linux. One is
commercial and good (better than AKAIs) the other is free (as in beer)
and about the same as AKAIs, but more stable. AKAI only care about Macs,
and now the 3000 series is obsolete, there is no hope.

I was planning to slowly move over at best, old habbits die hard, and I'm
pretty used to my windows environment, although, I'm deeply unimpressed
with software audio sequencing. I used to use a fostex harddisc recorder,
which was much more of a pain to edit, but rock solid and next to no
latency.
