if you plan to do anything serious with the hammerfall PLEASE, PLEASE
do not use ALSA 0.5.X. this version of ALSA contains a version of the
driver that was thrown out because of design problems. the new version
has never been backported to 0.5.X. there are many, many fundamental
differences between the two drivers.

As someone else said, try moving the cards around. This happened to me
once (spontaneously, it appeared), and I had to shuffle cards around
to avoid it. it was incredibly annoying.

its been so long since i used ALSA 0.5.X that i don't remember if
aplay even worked for the hammerfall with that version. the best way
to check things out is to upgrade to ALSA 0.6.0 (CVS), and then try
aplay or just try using my "passthru" utility with an incoming
signal. you can find passthru by searching the ALSA alsa-devel mailing
list archive, or by writing me directly. its a very short shell script
that resets one of the driver controls.
