This is not quite correct. There is no builtin control port type at
present, so any control port will have buffer of the size specified by
the port's registration request.

I am fairly convinced that we probably need a way for users of ports
with variable-sized data to specify/determine the amount of the port's
buffer that is "valid" during a given process cycle.
