That is another reason that source rpm's are nice. They *are* tarballs.
But they contain the information to compile and install themselves into
a new rpm, packaged nice and personal for your system. Even the source
is available. That is what the --rebuild does...builds it exactly for
your system. This is why source rpms are good, even if binaries can't be
used due to one reason or another. The difficulties of packaging are
extreme, but user opinion tends to track image of ease of use
(regardless of whether it is realistic or not). The big windows example,
some dumb average user thinks it is easy to install their games and
complicated programs there...it requires something like InstallShield
(last I saw, $800 and buggy as hell), and someone willing to learn a
dedicated language, as well as someone smart enough to not kill off the
registry. It sucks to be a packager. But it also has value, depending on
who the audience is (just be thankful you don't have to package
something complicated for NT).
