RME seems to be proud of their technology, including that it
works with Linux.

I suggest that no matter what their past policy has been, if you are
_really_sure_ you are going to write the driver, then go ahead and
ask them for an engineering sample.

Just make damn sure if you get a free card, you either develop the
driver or give the card to someone who will! And give them an
acknowledgement for providing the development hardware that you used.
