No, this is wrong, you can do what you want using PCM type file.
Sample .asoundrc:

pcm.hwpcm {
        type hw
        card 0
        device 0
}

pcm.test {
        type file
        slave.pcm hwpcm
        file /tmp/audio.raw
}
