I've found that xmms is "more compatible" with slightly oddball mp3s
than mpg123, FWIW. The version of mpg123 that comes with RH 7.1 in
particular has some difficulty with VBR-encoded mp3s (which is what I
use for classical and opera so they sound marginally more in tune than
typical mp3s). Some mp3s won't play at all in mpg123, and still others
sound "scratchy" -- all of these seem to work in xmms. (Which is odd
because IIRC xmms' mp3 capabilities are based on mpg123.)

I think xmms defaults to the disk writer output plugin if it doesn't
have a config file or if it can't read it for some reason. (Perhaps
because "disk writer" is first alphabetically?) That really seems like
a poor design choice, as a few hundred megabytes of mp3s can fill a
partition pretty quickly when converted to .wav files...
