I investigated this matter a bit further, and the crackling sounds
are actually at capture: I run the alsa-lib/test/latency , and
write all input sound to a file. When I look at it, it confirms
what I hear: random values at random places. When I generate playback
instead of playing the input sound, it sounds okay.
This happens with latest alsa, and my kernel compiled for 386 on
a AMD Athlon.
