Hi!
aRts-0.6.0 is available as standalone release.
What is it?
------------
This release contains a standalone version of the aRts sound server. Running
artsd will allow you to let multiple applications play and record sounds at
once, network transparently. Besides being a very modular sound server, aRts
is also a media framework.
The core design of the aRts framework involves several concepts:
* sound (or other media streams) is produced and processed in small modules,
which are connected to achieve the desired effect
* communication through MCOP - the multimedia communication protocol, enables
multiple applications running in seperate processes to work together at
media oriented tasks
aRts is good at midi synthesis, realtime processing, a useful tool for
creating music, but also at applying effects, filters, decoding media, and
so on. Plugins can be easily added. It's a good base for applications.
Note that this is a standalone release. Most people currently use aRts in
conjunction with KDE (aRts is included in all versions >= KDE2.0). The
standalone release is lacking a lot of frontend code for most advanced
tasks. This means: whereas the sound server itself is really stable and
usable for everybody, arts-extras currently is probably something for
developers.
Changes since arts-0.5.4:
-------------------------
* finished Arts::InputStream/Arts::StreamPlayObject interface for decoding
streaming media
* added Arts::PitchablePlayObject for changing playing speed/pitch of media
on the fly
