If you want to wade in the depths you should have a look at PD (Pure data).
It resembles Max/MSP but it's free and open source (which means that you can
explore every detail of it). You can download it at Miller Puckette site
http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/, but you should definitely also join the mailing
list http://iem.kug.ac.at/mailinglists/pd-list/ and stop by at
http://www.pure-data.org where a lot of additional resources can be found.
