You can use a protocol which hasn't the limitations
of midi (7 bit CC data :() and trunk it on the ends
that need midi (filter the more dynamic range
to the coarser range).

Of course this brings issues about the different
dynamic ranges used and I think you'll hear it.

I just don't think there is any good reason
to use the restrictions imposed by midi
when you stay inside your computer
(it is not as if you need to be able
 to pass all your data on a 33600 baud
 cable, is it ?)
