Regarding the Wavelet transform and Wavelet packets they have
been applied to audio in various forms. However
wavelets in audio haven't had the success they had with images.
The discrete wavelet transform can provide a fast way
to compute an octave decomposition that can be used
for analysis tasks such as transient detection,
feature extraction, and beat detection. Using
the DWT reduces significantly the computation
time compared with a similar filterbank implementation
without any multiresolution.

I have successfully used wavelets for beat detection and
feature extraction from audio signals. You can check
the details in the following publications:

"Musical Genre Classification of Audio Signals", George Tzanetakis,
Perry Cook IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing, July 2002

3."Audio Analysis using the Discrete Wavelet Transform ", George
Tzanetakis, Georg Essl, Perry Cook n. Proc. WSES Int. Conf. Acoustics
and Music: Theory and Applications (AMTA 2001) Skiathos, Greece 2001
(available online at www.cs.princeton.edu/~gtzan/publications.html)

Other applications are in computer music synthesis
and audio compression.
