Nearly every stomp box "tube distortion" i've ever opened,
or looked at a circuit for, uses diodes for clipping.

Craig Anderton's Tube Sound Distortion, sounds pretty good:
(uses two stages of a 4049 CMOS inverter for distortion!)

(similar, but uses 3 stages of the 4049)
