I think the clicks in most mouse wheels would make it unsuitable for
manipulating audio controls.

The velocity idea you mention sounds like it COULD work, but I'm
sceptical. I guess actually trying it out is the only way to tell.

Regardless of how well it feels, I don't think I would want to tweak a
knob with a clickey mouse wheel. Not to say the behavior shouldn't be
there, it doesn't get in the way of anything. (It's somewhat stupid not
having the mouse wheel move knobs really, if it's not doing anything
else might as well)
