I've made drum sounds with spiralsynthmodular, there is a track here:

where all the percussion (along with the rest of it) is synthesised live.
And also, I've just noticed there is a specialised bass drum synth patch for
ssm there too:

You can drive it with seq24 via midi.

I could never get this to work either, although I couldn't see that there was
anything that wrong looking at the source. It might just be really picky about
it's input values.
